The Observatory Analyst reasons over the entire record and returns intelligence, not results. Built for research teams, investment analysts, and strategy functions who need to understand how a market changed and where it is going.
How has the buy-now-pay-later market's technology consolidated since 2022?
Between 2022 and 2026 the leading providers converged on a small set of infrastructure choices. Klarna, Afterpay, and Zip all moved payment orchestration to Adyen or an in-house equivalent, retiring earlier third-party processors.
Apple Pay became universal across their EU and US checkouts by mid-2024. On the front end the market moved decisively to server-rendered React: six of the eight providers in the record adopted Next.js between 2023 and 2025, replacing older single-page frameworks.
The direction is consolidation onto fewer, heavier platforms, and a shift from growth-era experimentation to infrastructure that reads as durable. Where a provider has not yet moved, the record suggests it is likely to within four quarters.
